New CSI Specification Practice Guide has been published

February 1, 2011 — The new CSI Specifications Practice Guide was published and became available in January. I had the honor to be asked to author this new volume and worked closely with the Technical Committee and the Practice Guide Task Team to complete this project.

The Specifications Practice Suide is joined by the Project Delivery and Construction Administration Practice Guides to begin the update and replacement of the (PRM) Project Resource Manual in the coming year. They will be followed by other guides scheduled to be release towards the end of the summer. These other guides will address, Product Representatives, Facilities Management, and Sustainability.

All these guides are to be valuable resources for the Design and Construction Professionals and the supporting team, and will be the resource used by the certification and education committees as the resource for the certification exam.

In addition to the membership priviliges Wade will be able to get full access to the news and events being generated by the Council and its sister entity GBCI. This will enable Wade to stay at the leading edge of any developments of the LEED building certification and professional credentialing maintenance programs as they are developed and released by these groups.

CSI UniFormat chapter presentation

October 27, 2010 — Last night the chapter inagurated a new feature at the monthly meeting. The program will now include a brief presentation demonstrating the core values of the institute strategic plan.

One of those values is providing formats and standards to the design construction process.

The program I presented described the recently released 2010 edition of the UniFormat. This is the first update since 2004. Bringing this critical preliminary organizational tool up to date to assist in describing the design elements of the project.

This tool has been developed by CSI to bring the elements that will be included in the BIM modeling of the objects and will bridge over to the work results described by the MasterFormat tool that will then specify the work and materials to be included in the contract documents. There are many formats and standards that have been developed (and are continuing to be developed) by the institute and the chapter intends to bring them to the attention of the chapter members and guests attending these monthly meetings.
